THE FUTURE IS HERE

Amidst GOING GREEN and keeping our color!!! Let us pontificate on things less serieux...and what could be more perfect than dissecting New York Fall 2008 Fashion Week...as the Germans would say VEHL (well!!)

WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS MAY STAY IN VEGAS but what happens in NYFW definitely influences the world over....after all from your jean silhouette to your favorite song, to your political stance it is all reflected subtly and not so subtly in the creativity of the teams that make up the apparel industry.

Every year, twice a year NY receives createurs the world over who come to the tents at Bryant Park to show their collections for the upcoming seasons; divided into two showings the SPRING/SUMMER collections shown in September and FALL/WINTER collections which are shown in February. The whole idea behind this extravaganza is to generate enough buzz around the collections to entice the Buyers and ultimately romance the consumers to buy. Estimated to be a trillion dollar Industry, about 10 percent of NY's economy, it supports a world wide network of textile, production and labor the world. To the designers showing in NYFW has become synomous with "having made it"; it works as a platform for many international and US designers to get exposure and employs about one tenth of NYC's work force from designers, to assistant designers, pattern makers, seamstresses, account execs, graphic artists, models, stylists, magazine editors, writers, retail employees and lately the celebrities...yes ...yes yes...they do get paid to show up!!!

This year, from the usual monsters of design to the up and coming new talent, as a musically inclined friend of mine would say: NY DELIVERED!! But what was delivered you may ask? VEHL...putting together a collection is a long process and Fashion is the only Industry that re-invents itself twice a year ... (no ...no Madonna has nothing to do with it) ....well at lest not directly!!! OK... in order to inspire and get inspired designers need financial backers who in turn want returns and retailers who want sell troughs (well at least ...push for it) and it all starts with mood boards and inspirations from the most obvious to the not so much...a song, a phrase, a movie a gesture, a taste...well you get the point!!! Then a search starts to buy fabrics, apply the moods to silhouettes, shapes, colors and VOILA....now it must all be edited, sewn, samples made and now time to pick the cattle ...I mean the models...poor things ...they will get plucked, pulled, tied and amidst it all show no emotion....at least that is the motto these days...what are we doing? Any way let us get to the nitty gritty ...all must be ready, edited and perfected for the frisson of the fifteen minutes at Bryant Park...flash...flash...flash....the Wintors, the Leon-Talleys, the Rotfield, the Beckhams ( uhhhggg) ...sorry could not resist, and yes the final bow....then come the reviews....

VEHL...Calvin (..Klein that is) pulled it together with a clean and minimal collection by Brazilian wonder createur, Francisco Costa! Thank God nesta era de extravaganzaaah!! Donna (...Karan that is) not so much...as to quote " "creatrice majoris" (pronounced crayahtriche) adorable Edna from Pixar's The Incredibles. Donna K. sent out to the runway a slew of Victorian like dresses that bring to mind more Sinha Moca ( Rede Glob's original production circa 1987) than her usual sensual "essaince" of bare shoulders and shape friendly silhouettes...and this time I do think that "les figurinistas" of Rede Gobo did get right back then....pero non en due mile ed otto carissima Donna....donde estan the beautiful jersey pieces with clasps and jewel closures that so defined her core women? Oh Vehl!!!
.....but all was not a miss yet le maitre and enfant terrible du monde Fasssshhhh was yet to show his Autumn collection that is MARC JACOBS ou Jacobzollah pros intimos (...que Deus sabe nao sou....alguem cheira um processo a calunia? Deus "mi" "livri" como en disant nas terras of La Bundchen -Giselle that is) ! The breath of fresh air brought NY to its knees as usual with a stunning retro collection of C A L M ....yes calm...the color palette of the show was a sea soft blues like the Hawaii sky, seafoam tones all paired with heather and charcoal grays. Here silhouttes were very fluid with gorgeous wide leg pants knee, length coats and apliquees on coat lapels a la 80's...SEXY ?? Je ne crois pas but one knows that today women truly do not subscribe fascist fashion and will inspire themselves and find ways of working these pieces or silhouettes - pocket permitting on to their 'drobes!! I can see a sexy Miami, Praia or Mindelo siren working a pair of the wide leg pants avec un "bandeau top" or "simplement" working the boyfriend pant with her existing tank top avec or sans hills...that is globalization for you. so resumindo e concluindo do not take it all seriously be aware, get inspired and then tear it all apart and as Sandra Bernhard once said "Honey, the designers are knocking that shit right off your back!" to bluntly put it. I say experiment with what works for you and RE-CYCLE and RE-WORK your own, your relatives' vintage pieces and if you want a GREEN stance shop your local vintage stores or raid your mom, dad, sis, dad and grand-ma and pa's closet for your "pieces -de- resistance " !!!

Make GREEN or GREEN conscious fashion decisions.......hasta la vista with more the of the Globes’ FW....next London!!

XOXO
T. Moreno
